A wood fireplace needs a flue and, in many places, council approval, so it takes more planning than electric or ethanol. These are the questions to work through first.
Does a wood fireplace need a flue?
Yes. A wood fireplace requires a suitable chimney or flue system to carry combustion products outside. The appliance and flue must be installed to the applicable requirements.
Can I use my existing chimney?
Possibly, but it needs assessment for condition, dimensions and compatibility. An existing chimney may require a liner or other work before it can safely serve a new fireplace.
Do I need approval to install a wood fireplace?
Requirements vary by location and property. Contact your local council before installation. Strata, landlord or other property approvals may also apply.
Does a wood fireplace need a hearth?
Many models require a hearth or floor protector. Its dimensions, construction and thermal properties depend on the appliance and installation. A decorative slab is not automatically suitable.
What firewood should I use?
Use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer, typically dry, seasoned, untreated firewood. Do not burn painted or treated timber, rubbish or unsuitable materials.
Why does my wood fireplace smoke?
Possible causes include unsuitable fuel, insufficient air, a cold or obstructed flue, poor chimney draw or incorrect operation. Persistent smoke entering the room needs professional investigation.
How often should a wood fireplace and flue be cleaned?
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and have the installation inspected and cleaned as appropriate for your usage. Soot and creosote build-up must not be ignored.
