Ethanol fireplaces: what to know before you buy

Decoflame Montreal see-through ethanol fireplace

Ethanol fireplaces burn real fuel with a real flame. Here's what to understand before you choose one.

Do ethanol fireplaces have a real flame?

Yes. Ethanol fireplaces burn liquid fuel to produce a real flame. They require careful operation, appropriate placement and compliance with the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Do ethanol fireplaces need a flue?

Many ethanol fireplaces are designed without a conventional flue. This does not mean they can be installed anywhere: minimum room size, ventilation, clearances and installation requirements still apply.

Can an ethanol fireplace heat a room?

Ethanol combustion produces heat, and some models provide meaningful supplementary warmth. Suitability depends on the fireplace and room. Decorative models should not automatically be treated as a replacement for primary heating.

What fuel should I use?

Use only the fuel specified or approved by the manufacturer. Do not substitute petrol, other alcohol mixtures or an unspecified fuel.

Can I refill an ethanol fireplace while it is burning?

No. Never refuel a burner while it is alight or hot. Extinguish it completely, allow it to cool and follow the manufacturer’s refuelling procedure and cooling time.

How long does ethanol fuel last?

Burn time depends on tank capacity, fuel consumption and the flame setting, where adjustable. Refer to the manufacturer’s figures for your model.

Do ethanol fireplaces produce emissions?

Yes. They involve combustion and release combustion products into the surrounding air. Follow the model’s ventilation and minimum room-size requirements; “flueless” does not mean emission-free.

What is the difference between manual and automatic ethanol burners?

Manual burners typically require manual lighting and extinguishing. Automatic models may offer electronic ignition, adjustable settings and safety monitoring. Features and refuelling procedures vary by model.

Can I use an ethanol fireplace outdoors?

Only use a fireplace outdoors if the manufacturer approves it for that environment. Weather exposure, wind, positioning and storage requirements must also be considered.
